Peptic ulceration is believed to develop because of increased acid and pepsin secretion, a reduced mucosal defense mechanism. The association between cigarette cigarette smoking and peptic ulceration and in addition the healing rates of duodenal
ulcer
are slower in smoker than nonsmoker.
